Root canal treatment is necessary when the tooth has died or is dying, usually as a result of trauma or a deep hole in the tooth, even if the hole has been filled or crowned. If left untreated the tooth will develop an abscess which can eventually result in extraction. To root treat a tooth we will make it very numb and then usually isolate it with a special sheet called rubber dam to keep it clean. We will then remove the nerve, clean the tooth to remove any bacteria that have got in and then fill and seal the root to prevent reinfection.
